Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 87! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 18 of The Book of Life

Jack's scent is the least of what's changed about him . . .

Take 87 - The One With Coal Fires & Foggy Mornings

Description: JACK! Jack tells his tale to Matthew and Diana, Hubbard fills in the gaps, but we now have a picture of what Jack suffered through, and who was mostly responsible for his anguish. Stay tuned for our SIFTs segment, where we do a podcast version of "vague-booking" -- enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Topic:
Chapter 18, The Book of Life

  • It’s JACK!
  • Coal fires and foggy mornings . . . ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Matthew watches the scene from afar. We wonder if he doesn’t trust Gallowglass to actually protect Diana? ๐Ÿค”
  • OH NO. Jack has the blood rage!
  • Did we expect father Hubbard in first read? 2 no, 1 yes.
  • Diana’s getting choked out, and Matthew is scuffling with Hubbard! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • The many Loberos . . .
  • Jack’s blood rage is really skittish; anything can set it off.
  • We reiterate that Matthew remains a dead-beat dad.
  • We mention his book description vs. the TV iteration of F. Hubbard
  • They enter the house to listen to Jack’s tale. STORY ๐Ÿ“– TIME!
  • Gallowglass is not happy with this situation. A scuffle with Hubbard just proved that he should have taken up the offer to practice his "wrestling" with Chris.
  • “Mistress Roydon” … “My name is Bishop”
  • Father Hubbard is your grandson, Matthew (MIKE DROP) ๐ŸŽค
  • Benjamin Fox is Hubbard’s sire, and now Benjamin wants Jack for the blood rage.
  • Gallowglass enters the “jump to conclusions” mat.
  • Our assumptions included a ring criminal kids or the land of misfit toys ... Gallowglass went a little further with his.
  • Gallowglass gets pinned, and we are in the ditch ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • Hubbard is strong … ๐Ÿ’ช
  • Diana calls Corra? We wonder why?
  • Corra flies around with fire and song . . . we question the “fire” part ๐Ÿ”ฅ
  • Corra remembers Jack (but we point out that, for Corra, it wasn’t that long ago)
  • They settle in to listen to Jack’s tale ... OK, NOW it's STORY ๐Ÿ“– TIME!
  • Jack had the plague prior to his transformation.
  • We learn of Annie's death —wait…Annie’s dead?!
  • We learn the fates of Walter and Henry through Jack’s story -- but Matthew knew this, right?!
  • Jack asked to become a vampire … he wanted to see Matthew and Diana again.
  • We learn that Benjamin manipulated Jack through his feelings for Matthew.
  • OH! Philippe knew…
  • Matthew had no idea of Philippe’s admiration of Matthew; Matthew, get over yourself. ๐Ÿคจ
  • Jack goes into a blood rage, and Matthew takes control.
  • We discuss how Diana can articulate the intricacies of blood rage when it appeared to the reader that she had only limited exposure to Matthew in this state.
  • The blood feds the blood rage vampire AND the blood rage.
  • The tale gets more horrific “Vampire on the loose in London” ๐Ÿ“ฐ
  • Peter . . . what were you doing?! Getting PAID, is what he was doing! ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿค‘
  • Ugh…Benjamin and crew are AWFUL
  • Ultimately, the tale makes Jack (and us) sick ๐Ÿคข
  • Diana weaves spells to calm Jack down and help him sleep. Jean sees this as a mild version of spell binding.
  • “You’re Jack’s father. You always have been” ๐Ÿฅบ
  • FIN

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
