Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 79! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 11 of The Book of Life

Dark? Light? Good? Bad? Where are we going, here?

Take 79 - The One With the Crossroads

Description: Now that Diana, Matthew, Sarah, and Fernando have settled into life in the House, a comfortable routine has been established. Through a little Fernado story-time, we learn a little more about Fernando's life with Hugh and Gallowglass. We observe how Sarah's garden plays a major role in her work as a witch. We witness what an advocate the House is for Sarah's well being (it has a funny way of showing it!) All appears to be well, until Diana discovers the crossroads on her aunt's property. Voices of the dead, the pull of the moon, and the dark powers that beckon her -- all of these things frighten Diana to her core. The real scary part is the epiphany that she actually wants the knowledge/power, and believes that Matthew will hate her for it. And there is that little secret about a bargain made with the Goddess two books ago . . .

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

"Hellebore makes any disguising spell more effective."
Topic: Chapter 11, The Book of Life
  • Matthew is taking in the news that Rebecca’s powers are very influential on Diana’s — c’mon Matthew!
  • Diana is trying to tempt Matthew into his scientific curiosities ๐Ÿ”ฌ
  • We talk about blood in ink being a common practice (!)✒️
  • DITCH. This time Angela is dragged in. ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • Sarah finally has help around the house! She’s crafted a honey-do list for Diana. No need to call Verizon or AT&T!
  • Fernando had taken over the home and was in charge of its occupants nutritional requirements ๐Ÿฅฌ
  • We learn that Gallowglass is a world-class slob.
  • Was Fernando covertly preparing them for war?⚔️
  • Meanwhile, the House was waging a successful war against Sarah!๐ŸŽถ
  • Sarah took her frustration out on the house, thus leaving her kindness available for Diana.
  • While on a trip to Sarah’s garden, we encountered a CROSSROADS. EEK ๐Ÿ˜ฑ
  • We like that the Oneida were brought up in this chapter; we are able to tie other books together with this one.
  • We discuss the low-key derision for Sarah’s form of magic.
  • Diana turns down Sarah’s invitation to go into the garden at night….Diana is scared of the voices.
  • Diana is pulled in by the voices, and heads out anyway! Matthew stops her and waits for her to explain.
  • The secret of the Goddess’ bargain comes to light! ๐Ÿฟ
  • We compare this scene to Matthew’s chapel scene in SON
  • We discuss the aspects of the Goddess that and their representation from ADOW: The power of the tree and the earth flowed through my veins, an unexpected offering of life to a vampire on the verge of death. I smiled in gratitude at the huntress and the ghost of the old woman, nourishing Matthew with my body. I was the mother now, the third aspect of the goddess along with the maiden and the crone. With the goddess’s help, my blood would heal him.
  • Diana explains the whole “life for a life” thing.
  • Matthew the fixer comes to the “rescue”
  • Matthew wants Diana to call the Goddess up and fix this thing. Diana: Dude, that’s not how any of this works! Matthew’s calling up the Goddess harkens us to Fred Flintstone calling the Great Gazoo.
  • You’re mine, and I’m not done with you yet!
  • Sooooo…it turns out this deal with the crossroads wasn’t so ominous.
  • We discuss the chain (related to the Fleetwood Mac song)! Not janky, this time. It was life that brought them there.
  • A present was waiting for them in house…PS the house is terrible at wrapping presents ๐ŸŽ
  • It turns out to be Rebecca’s infamous spell book! It kind of disappointed us, because it turned out to be a composition notebook!๐Ÿ““
  • Rebecca called up the dead to ask mundane teen questions — about boys!๐Ÿ’ž
  • The caul…ewww๐Ÿคฎ.
  • Diana quit running from her formidable powers, therefore she’s ready for the book!
  • “Do not refuse me because I am dark and shadowed,” “As I am the end, my lover is the beginning..
  • FIN

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
