Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 59! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 33 & 34 of Shadow of Night

😱😰😢

Take 59 - The One With the Twisted Sister

Description: In this double feature episode covering two chapters of Shadow of Night, we look at the dangerous creatures in and around Diana Bishop & Matthew Clairmont's lives. First, we are confronted with the anomaly that has gotten away from the de Clermonts, and landed into the hands of Peter Knox (and Gerbert!); poor Pavel! Second, we are launched back to Tudor England, to manage the temper-ridden monarch, and meet Matthew's legendary sister, Louisa de Clermont. She's using our resident love-sick, unstable, drugged-out, tale-telling, finger-pointing daemon as her guide. Strap in!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. 😊  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Chapter 33, Shadow of Night - Prague, 2010
  • We’re still in Prague! With Peter, no less! Boo!
  • Peter has a patsy named Pavel.
  • According to our calculations, based on the material provided in this chapter, Peter was in his 80’s! Stephen would’ve been not too far behind! That’s what happens when bored fans have time 😜
  • Congregation: Old ways vs. new ways.
  • Pavel seems to be quite the character!
  • Val sucks at Latin (bygones!)
  • 1989 is when communism fell in Prague … we wonder if this is why the letter got transferred over to this library.
  • The letter from Rabbi Loew — to Benjamin.
  • This is turning out to be a lot of information in Peter’s hands! YIKES😱
  • The three pages . . . Benjamin is looking for it too!
  • The “loving friend” bit! Was Rabbi hoodwinked by Benjamin? πŸ˜’
  • You did well, Pavel *pat-pat* as a reward, a STROKE! Yay! 🀯
  • Peter can justify his actions by telling himself he was more kind than a vampire!πŸ˜‡
  • Peter calls our pal Gerbert! Gerbert is trying to put on a calm front, but Peter knows something’s up.
  • We devolve into a weird Gerbert admiration session — please excuse us! πŸ–€
  • Peter relays his findings, and Gerbert is pretending not to care.
  • Peter demands to know who Benjamin was -- *raises 6 hands* oh, oh! We know!!!
  • It’s out! Benjamin belongs to Matthew . . . kind of.
  • Peter starts his wall with strings/connections/evidence to justify action. Gerbert: “yawn.”
  • The blood rage talk, but they don’t know Matthew has it!
  • Can Peter time-walk? Signs point to no.
  • Peter contemplates storming the de Clermont castle! Gerbert: “That’s dumb” πŸ™„
  • Peter has justice on his side, he’s a bit deluded.
  • Gerbert: “while you’re going, may as well kill someone for killing my Juliette!” Peter: “That was easy!”
  • So they plan a raid of Sept-Tours, and we're whisked back to the past. Wait -- wut?!! We wanna know about the raid! 😧
Chapter 34, Shadow of Night - England, 1691
  • "YOU FAILED ME!" We love this scene! πŸ‘ΈπŸ»
  • The Queen is upset. Time for Noblety™ music! πŸ‘‘
  • Diana speaks too much, so says the Queen. Sometimes, we think so too, Lizzie.
  • Bess Throckmorton has caught Walter’s eye! πŸ–€
  • The Queen’s temper was apparently legendary, and we have rare empathy for the queen due to our rough weeks at work. 🀨 "Queen Elizabeth I was notorious for her bad temper. She swore and cursed, and allegedly threw a slipper at one of her courtiers and spat on another because she didn't like the way they dressed!" - Source: These Facts on Queen Elizabeth the First are Too Good to Pass Up
  • Matthew’s bullsh*t (we love you, Matthew!)
  • Lord Burghley manages the Queen very well!
  • The tennis match in court!
  • Val still thinks that the Queen had a crush, and they totally did it in her head.
  • The Queen’s tone changed . . . Maybe Matthew won’t die after all!
  • Then there were three. Everyone else is shuffled out of the room. The sense of dread is real!
  • The act was all for show! The Queen seems a bit more reasonable behind closed doors. Much like modern-day politicians, play-acting seemed to be the thing to do.
  • We ditch out in the dentist office!🦷
  • The decay! Yikes! Elizabeth may have been patient zero with tooth decay.
  • Medieval Ambesol!
  • We try to imagine wearing medieval dress while pregnant — ugh. No.
  • Which book? 😬
  • The Lie! I know you bitches have been talking about me!
  • Diana gives the lie (kind of!)
  • The philosopher’s stone! It will save me! Who wants to tell her? Matthew will.
  • The Queen: Make me a vampire, then? Matthew: Yeah, no. Calm down, Lizzie.
  • Hey! The necklace! It’ll fix everything! They work out a pretty solution around the book, to appease Rudolf.
  • So, the book? Matthew: It means nothing! The Queen: Lies! Matthew: It means everything! The Queen: Bigger lies! πŸ“–
  • Time to handle the Ambassador . . .
  • Things are solved, Matthew sends Diana to go rest while he ties loose ends with the Queen
  • Pierre sends Annie to show Diana to the rooms — but HELLO, KIT.
  • The cold stare of a vampire πŸ§›πŸ»‍♀️— WAKE UP, DIANA!
  • The shovel Diana used to dig herself a deeper hole: a poem that Diana is familiar with.
  • We discuss why Diana would poke the bear.
  • The tilt yard! Wanna go? Us: NOooooooo, DIANA!!!!!🐎
  • Oprah: If it’s too good to be true, If it’s too good to be true, IT’S TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE!
  • DANGER! 🚨
  • LOUISA!
  • KIT WANTS TO KILL YOU, DIANA! πŸ—‘
  • The drugs, the feeding, the scar … this has been going on for a while!
  • Finally, “think and stay alive…”
  • Louisa: “dude, let’s flip for her!”
  • FIN.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
