Daemons Discuss - Podcast: Take 57! | Chapter Discussion about the All Souls Trilogy; Chapter 31 of Shadow of Night

Take 57 - The One With Red Wine and Onions

Description: The day in/day out of Emperor Rudolf's Prague is wearing on us, however we couldn't have asked for a more satisfactory "goodbye" than this chapter! There's drama (school play), there's romance (in Rudolf's mind!), and there's action (the great escape!). Oh and of course, we finally get our sights on the missing book, Ashmole 782. Enjoy!

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read All Souls universe books, including the trilogy (A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, The Book of Life), and  Time's Convert + snippits from The World of All Souls. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  Please be advised, we will approach the television series (A Discovery of Witches) the same way as episodes are released in the US/Canada. ๐Ÿ˜Š  Let's do this. *Note - this podcast is labeled 'explicit'

Topic:
Chapter 31, Shadow of Night
  • We start the wagon, we crash the wagon! ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿš™
  • We talk about Matthew’s changes since taking blood from the heart vein - he’s settled, and we decided he was just hangry
  • Diana’s scar collection has grown at this point!
  • We’re not sure we’d want to do regular info dumps with our partners. ๐Ÿ˜ฃ
  • Gallowglass and Pierre are notified that Benjamin is back in town. Neither of them are happy about this...
  • Rudolf’s festival is coming up, and we are all weary of Prague. We understand Matthew!
  • Riding and jousting indoors? ๐Ÿ’ฉ
  • We don’t believe Rudolf is an intellectual (based on this novel, anyway).
  • Let the masque begin! ๐ŸŽญ
  • Matthew is not amused with this spectacle. Diana enters in a fantastic fashion!
  • Rudolf as Zeus - he’s … er, something. We recommend listening to him on the audio books!
  • It’s over, now Rudolf grants Diana a reward! At what cost, though?!
  • Gallowglass explains what was happening during Diana’s entrance. Conclusion: humans are pretty dumb.
  • After days of waiting, they are finally invited to Rudolf’s!
  • Culinary ditch! This time we explore the anatomy of a green bean casserole.
  • Matthew, Diana, Pierre and Gallowglass head to the castle
  • Matthew holds court on one end of the table, and Rudolf holds court on the other.
  • Pistorius rudely starts probing Diana’s head. He does some mind-talking
  • We first learn that Gallowglass smells like sea-salt and mint.
  • Gallowglass takes care of Pistorius ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
  • Dinner's done. Time to check out the curiosities (including the book) ๐Ÿ“–
  • Diana gets yet another necklace. ๐Ÿค‘
  • Diana makes the connection between Benjamin and the necklace, and we try to make sense of it.
  • “Little French Salamanders” - we want to beat Rudolf! ๐Ÿคฌ Diana handles it more diplomatically.
  • Matthew stops giving a shit, he starts burning bridges with Rudolf.
  • Enter Edward. He’s a wreck! He’s got the book.
  • Diana has to look at the book with Rudolf breathing down her neck.
  • The moment of PREUNION ( © ZOE!)
  • We see the new pages: A tree, the alchemical wedding, and an ouroboros with two creatures -- fighting? Hooking up? Unclear.
  • The book’s smell…even worse than the red wine and onions.
  • Matthew knows what this smell is. Eventually Diana gets it.
  • Edward loses his sh!t! He explains that they are bound to the book.
  • Enter Gallowglass, exit the de Clermont clan!
  • The grand escape!
  • FIN
A Bezoar from Rudolf's cabinet of curiousities

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
