Daemons Discuss: Podcast - Take 8! | All Souls Trilogy Characters Take the Myers-Briggs Personality Test (sort of!)

Take 8 - The One With Personality

Description: Happy New Year! Now that the festivities of the season are in past tense, let's dive right in!  We've always been fascinated by the personalities of the characters in this series.  So fascinated in fact, that we took it a step beyond with a nudge from one of our Discussers (thank you, Michelle).  Without further ado, we present this totally unscientific analysis of different characters of this series.  Included are the Myers-Briggs personality types of (based on our own interpretations & not in order): Hamish, Stephen, Ysabeau, Philippe, Benjamin, Baldwin, Matthew, Diana, Miriam and finally Marcus -- who we took the test for while recording.  Gallowglass, Fernando and Kit were done afterwards, and we've included those results in the show notes below.

SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life.  If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!  :)  Let's do this.

1. Show notes:

Four humors related to personality
A. For newcomers to the series:
- We'll start with the basics: The books in discussion are A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night and The Book of Life.  Together they make The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness.
- Our Daemon Guides to the All Souls Trilogy are available for download: ADOW, SON, TBOL
- If you'd like a ready-reference from the author herself, be sure to download the All Souls Real-Time Reading companion (free e-book at online booksellers via Penguin and Headline books).
- Deborah Harkness usually conducts a real-time reading on her Facebook Page (starting in September), and shares her posts across social media.  Check out her website for all of her social media links, and of course all that she has to offer her readers!
- To see what's available on the web as far as the All Souls universe fandom, check our links page.

B. In this episode:
* Thanks go out to our Discussers early in this round: Stephen, Milana, Livia, Sheila, Jennifer, and especially Michelle who brought this subject to our table.

16 Personalities website - we like it because it takes minutes as opposed to over an hour to answer the questions and get pretty accurate results: https://www.16personalities.com/

* (00:01) Excuse the weird monotone, Valerie just woke up to record after working late the night before.  That's her "sexy voice" ๐Ÿ˜

*  (04:46) Modernization of the 4 temperaments that Matthew probably learned about when he studied medicine in medieval times: Four temperaments is a proto-psychological theory that suggests that there are four fundamental personality types, sanguine (optimistic, active and social), choleric (short-tempered, fast or irritable), melancholic (analytical, wise and quiet), and phlegmatic (relaxed and peaceful).  It also taps into Jungian psychology - Our Theory - 16Personalities

* (06:04) What the letters mean in this test:
  • Introversion (I) or Extraversion (E)
  • Intuition (N) or Sensing (S)
  • Thinking (T) or Feeling (F)
  • Judging (J) or Perceiving (P)

* (06:45) Valerie is an ISTP “The Virtuoso”

* (08:54) Angela is an ESTJ “The Executive”

* (10:04) Jean is an ENFJ “The Protagonist”

* (11:23) Hamish is an ENTJ – “The Commander”

* (12:11) Ysabeau is an ESTJ (like Angela) “The Executive”

* (13:44) Stephen is an ENFP “The Campaigner”

* (14:24) Philippe an ENFJ  (like Jean) “The Protagonist”

* (15:09) Matthew is an ENTJ "The Commander"  He differs from Hamish because he is “Turbulent”

* (15:35) Diana is an INTJ “The Architect”.  Like Matthew she is also Turbulent.

* (18:33) Miriam (like Ysabeau) is an ESTJ – “The Executive”

* (19:22) Baldwin is ALSO an executive…ESTJ.

* (20:58) Benjamin was a commander ENTJ . . . like Matthew

* (22:42) Father Hubbard was an and ENFP “The Campaigner” ... like Stephen

* (25:51) We were wondering why we didn’t wind up doing Kit?  And then later we figured we'd do him along with Gallowglass and Fernando.  Oh well, we’ll do these off of the mic…you can scroll down to see the results of those.

* (26:25) Marcus….!  Tune in to hear us take the test for him.

* (28:44) Angela was referring to this scene in The Book of Life:
“Marcus is in the Round Tower with Sarah,” Ysabeau said, two spots of color brightening her usually pale complexion. “Phoebe and Hamish are with them. They’ve found the old family pedigrees.”
* (30:27) Jean was referring to Miriam’s little “tick marks” in this scene of A Discovery of Witches:
"Em and Sophie were both knitting, and Miriam was doing a puzzle she’d found in a book promising Demonically Difficult Sudoku. She chuckled now and then and made a mark in the margins.
“What are you doing, Miriam?” Sophie asked.
“Keeping score,” Miriam said, making another mark on the page.
“What are they talking about? And who’s winning?” I asked, envious of her ability to hear the conversation."
* (36:00) Marcus with the story of Lilith originates from A Discovery of Witches:
“Marcus is fond of the Pre-Raphaelites, and Miriam knows a lot of mythology. They picked the name,” Matthew said by way of explanation.
“The Pre-Raphaelites loved Lilith. Dante Gabriel Rossetti described her as the witch Adam loved before Eve.” Marcus’s eyes turned dreamy. “‘So went / Thy spell through him, and left his straight neck bent / And round his heart one strangling golden hair.’”
* (36:49) Val’s “F” word mini-rant - what was she was going on about?  To preface this 'rant' - (ok calling it a rant is quite a stretch.  It was more like a snarky aside), let's back up a bit to the early Spring of 2014 --March/April; we were lucky enough to get a hold of the "Advance Uncorrected Manuscript" from Penguin Group prior to the release of The Book of Life (being a Daemon does have certain privileges!)  The word "fuck" appeared in that manuscript no less than 6 times!  At the time we were secretly celebrating Deb's step into the dark side ๐Ÿ˜ˆ.  The final edit found three of the the "fucks" on the cutting room floor.  That was what Val was talking about.  Not that we cheer randomly placed curse words -- but we appreciate it when they are used effectively!  Anyway, that's all that was.  We don't like doing inside jokes that don't include you, so if you made it this far, you are now in-the-know!

 * (51:33) Deb's tweet :
C. Whoops! (Corrections)
* (39:58) Not quite sure if it's correct to call this a correction (more like clarification), but during this portion of the episode, there was some confusion as to what Marcus' human profession was during the Revolutionary War.  Upon going back to look at that chapter, we do know Marcus was acting as a nurse, and it is sort of implied in context that he was officially part of the medical corp.  However, Jean was correct in saying that he would've had different roles depending on the immediate need in battle.  The quote from A Discovery of Witches:
"Marcus had listened, wide-eyed, when the French soldier railed at the head of the army’s medical corps, the esteemed Dr. Shippen, rejecting his treatment plan as “barbaric.” Clairmont demanded that the doctor’s second in command, John Cochran, treat Lafayette instead. Two days later Clairmont and Shippen could be heard arguing the finer points of anatomy and physiology in fluent Latin—to the delight of the medical staff and General Washington.
Matthew had killed more than his share of British soldiers before the Continental Army was defeated at Brandywine. Men brought into the hospital spun impossible tales of his fearlessness in battle. Some claimed he walked straight into enemy lines, unfazed by bullets and bayonets. When the guns stopped, Clairmont insisted that Marcus remain with the marquis as his nurse."

* (42:40) “Hamilton”What was Val thinking?  It’s Madison!  She has Hamilton on the brain.  By the way, do you know of a good way to get reasonably priced tickets? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜‚

* (52:20) Val had said that we hadn't had an update from Deb for a while, but since recording this episode, she's posted the following: Monthly Inspiration Boards

 D. Bonus Material
* Fernando is an ESFJ-A, "The Consul".  Here is a quote from the personalities website that we felt was quite Fernando-like:
ESFJs are altruists, and they take seriously their responsibility to help and to do the right thing. Unlike their Diplomat relatives however, people with the ESFJ personality type will base their moral compass on established traditions and laws, upholding authority and rules, rather than drawing their morality from philosophy or mysticism. It’s important for ESFJs to remember though, that people come from many backgrounds and perspectives, and what may seem right to them isn’t always an absolute truth.

ESFJs love to be of service, enjoying any role that allows them to participate in a meaningful way, so long as they know that they are valued and appreciated. This is especially apparent at home, and ESFJs make loyal and devoted partners and parents. ESFJ personalities respect hierarchy, and do their best to position themselves with some authority, at home and at work, which allows them to keep things clear, stable and organized for everyone.
* Kit is an ENTP-T, "The Debater".  Here is a quote from the personalities website that we felt was quite Kit-like:
ENTPs are interested in what could be – malleable concepts like ideas and plans that can be adapted and debated. When it comes to hard details and day-to-day execution where creative flair isn’t just unnecessary but actually counter-productive, ENTP personalities lose interest, often with the consequence of their plans never seeing the light of day.
* Gallowglass is an ESFP-A, "The Entertainer".  Wait . . . what?!! Yes.  We took it twice -- just to make sure.  Here are a couple of snippets:
If anyone is to be found spontaneously breaking into song and dance, it is the ESFP personality type. ESFPs get caught up in the excitement of the moment, and want everyone else to feel that way, too. No other personality type is as generous with their time and energy as ESFPs when it comes to encouraging others, and no other personality type does it with such irresistible style.
Without constant excitement, ESFPs find ways to create it themselves. Risky behavior, self-indulgence, and the pleasures of the moment over long-term plans are all things ESFPs get into a little too often.  The smoking, the motorcycles, the wanderlust -- ah, yes!  We get it now.

* Our episode titles are a loving tribute to the show "Friends" just 'cause we love Friends and - let's face it - it's easier! Here's how one of the show creators explains their reasoning:
Jeff Greenstein: "When Marta & David & Jeff & I did 'Dream On', we used to spend a lot of time thinking about titles, because they were on-screen at the top of each episode. On "Friends", we decided that was a waste of time. We figured, why not name each episode after the thing that people will ostensibly be talking about around the water-cooler the next day?"
